What is z-wave?
Z-wave is a wireless protocol that focuses on connectivity within the smart home. It uses low-energy radio waves for smart devices to communicate with each other. (For a comparison, think that the range of z-wave connectivity is larger than that of Bluetooth, but smaller than that of wi-fi.)
How is z-wave connectivity different from Wi-Fi?
With Wi-Fi, everything has to be connected to a central hub, such as a router. Z-wave connectivity, on the other hand, forms a mesh network. This means that all z-wave devices are connected.
Normally, there will be a central hub that connects to the internet, but all devices do not have Wi-Fi capability; instead, they use z-wave connectivity to talk with each other and with the Central Center.
This network routed mesh topology with source has 232 nodes, which means you can connect 232 smart devices to the network.
How is z-wave different from Zigbee?
Basically, z-wave was designed to be easier to use and less expensive than Zigbee.
In addition, while z-wave and Zigbee both form mesh networks, z-wave operates with a frequency range of 800-900 MHz, instead of the 2,4 GHz frequency range of Zigbee. This means that z-wave receives much less interference than Zigbee.
